Homeschool Ministry

Grace Baptist Church has established a FREE ministry resource for families that have chosen to Homeschool their children in our community.  On Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 12:15pm we will be having age-appropriate classes for Elementary, Middle, and High School students.  The 2nd Semester will begin Wednesday, January 10th.

Arrival & Registration begins at 9:45am in the Sanctuary

Announcements & Prayer at 10:00am

Classes begin at 10:05am and run to 12:15pm

Dismissal will begin at 12:20pm from the main hallway outside of the Sanctuary

For proper security we are using an online sign-in system that requires each parent to bring their child into the church and come to pick them up at dismissal with the security tag assigned to their child.  Please know that each teacher and helper is a member of Grace Baptist Church and has passed a national background check.  Also, for the safety of each child, we will not be allowing parents to stay in the church after classes have begun.

Our Winter/Spring 2024 Class Schedule

Reading Lab:  Our Reading lab is designed to help Elementary level children continue to develop their reading skills.  Therefore, we will divide the children up into three basic groups (Early, Able, & Established) depending on their current abilities.   Please know that we may make changes to which class your child attends based on how they develop throughout the year.

Early Readers:  This class is geared towards students who are early on in their reading journey. We will begin by reviewing letter sounds and move into blending sounds to form words (CVC words, words with consonant blends, words consonant digraphs, and long vowel-sound words). We will also focus on reading fluency and comprehension of passages using these word patterns. We will follow the scope and sequence of the West Virginia Phonics Curriculum.

Able Readers:  This class is for students who have already established good reading skills. The goal this year is to show them that reading will allow them to take on an adventure, expand their minds, shape their dreams and inspire them to think big!  Kids love a good story. Each week the teacher will read a short story to them just for fun. The students will then share in reading  a short story out loud to the class followed by an activity that focuses on comprehension, sequencing, cause and effect and reading aloud with expression using the punctuation included in the story. This will help them to better understand what they are reading and reach the classroom goal.

Established Readers:  This class is for students who are proficient readers on a 3rd-5th grade reading level. The goals of this class are to build reading confidence, to inspire readers to explore the world of literature, to stimulate imaginations, and to expand vocabulary skills. This semester we will be reading The Long Winter We will be reading The Long Winter which is one of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is set in the winter of 1880-81 in De Smet in the Dakota Territory. That winter was known as the Hard Winter and Laura Ingalls Wilder lived through that time with her family and chose to write about it in this book. We will be using a novel study along with our out loud reading which incorporates vocabulary, reading comprehension, and literary devices.

Physical Education:  This class will focus on enhancing physical activity in an environment that is inclusive and that makes every child feel valued. Every student will participate in all activities unless there are true physical problems that would impede their success. Each class will begin with stretching and a warm up run followed by fun games to develop hand to eye coordination and muscle strengthening. Proper footwear is a must to achieve the goals of the PE class.

Elementary Anatomy: In this class we will explore Anatomy and Physiology using Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology from Apologia’s award-winning Young Explorer Series for K-6. Students will participate in science experiments, crafts and projects, and interactive notebook journaling.

From Apologia’s website: [This] curriculum specifically designed for elementary students. God made the human body wonderfully, and in this course, your student will explore the intricate and amazing design of the human body–from head to toe.  Key features of Apologia’s elementary series: Written Using the Charlotte Mason Method, Engaging, Hands-on Learning, Award-winning Curriculum

Optional Materials:  There is a student science journal available for purchase with this curriculum. It comes in two levels, the Junior notebook being for K-2, and the regular for 3rd grade and up. This is optional, but if you choose to purchase it, your student will need to bring it to each class. Those who do not wish to purchase the student journal will be provided a 1subject notebook for interactive notebook journaling through the course.

Government and Civics: Each week this semester we will look at a different form of government. This class will cover economic, political and authoritarian systems. The class will end the semester by spending several weeks studying American Civics.

Spanish: This introductory Spanish class will provide your child with a foundation in learning the Spanish language.  We will be focusing on pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. The goal is that students will gain confidence in both conversational and written Spanish! This is the second semester of Spanish and the class will pick up where it ended last semester.

We will be utilizing the book “Easy Spanish Step by Step” by Barbara Bregstein so we encourage you purchase the book before classes start (scholarships are available)
