March Pastor’s Notes

Although it may not feel like it yet, winter is finally beginning to wind down.  The days are getting longer, the daffodils are beginning to poke out of the soil, and it’s almost time for the dreaded “Daylight Saving Time”.  But there is one more sign that winter is almost over that every baseball fan waits for each year:  Spring Training!

In Arizona and Florida, hundreds of veterans and wide-eyed rookies are taking to the field to prepare themselves for a new season of hoping that this is the big one.  Spring Training is a time of physical conditioning, position drills, and practice games, in order to make them better players and stronger teammates.

In the same way, March opens up Grace Baptist’s Spring Training.  We have a lot planned for this year:  A record setting Easter Celebration, a fun-filled AWANA Grand Prix, Evangelistic Festival Outreaches, and another exciting and fruitful Vacation Bible School!  And all of that begins with our Spring Training.

On Saturday the 16th, we will be having another Grace Family Foundations Class, for anyone with questions about who we are and what we believe.  On Sunday the 24th, directly following our Service, we are going to have a special Leadership Training to continue to improve our already wonderful Children’s Ministry.  And starting Sunday the 3rd, we are going to begin a new Sermon Series from 1 Timothy chapter 4 entitled “Spring Training:  12 Essential Spiritual Disciplines”.

It is my prayer that God will use our month of Spring Training to build on our recent focus on the essence of True Worship to prepare us for another exciting and God-honoring year.  So, please join us all this month, as both our veterans and our wide-eyed rookies of the faith prepare ourselves for another season of hope!

GBC Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Please, spread the word!  Rain or shine!  Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will be on Sunday, April 14th. There will be a hot dog lunch at 12:30pm and the Egg Hunt and Games will begin at 1pm.  This event is FREE and open to everyone in the community, so please invite anyone you know with young children to join us for this fun event!

We need your help preparing for our annual Egg Hunt. Please, bring in a bag of individually wrapped candy, if possible, and place it in the basket on the blue ministry table beginning next Sunday. We will also be stuffing the eggs on April 7th, directly after the Worship service, so please stay and help us if you can.

Children’s Ministry Training Meeting & Luncheon

We are very excited to say that we will be hosting a Children’s Ministry Training Session for everyone involved in the Grace Children’s and Student Ministries. Our meeting will be on Sunday, March 24th, in the Fellowship Hall, directly after the Worship Service.  Lunch will be provided.  Please be sure to join us, as we equip each other to minister to and support the next generation. As we prepare for the attendees of this luncheon and training meeting, it would be very helpful to know how many to prepare for. You can RSVP with the sign-up sheet in the sanctuary on the blue ministry table. Please be sure to sign up for our training by this Sunday, and contact Nandrea Groves, if you have any questions.

February Pastor’s Notes

I want to start this month’s Pastor’s Notes by reminding you that I personally don’t believe that Christians should be overtly political, because it could limit our ability to share the Good News of Jesus Christ’s Gospel.  When the Apostle Paul said “22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.” (1 Corinthians 9:22-23), he was not saying that we should act like sinners to reach the sinful, as some have wrongly concluded.  Instead, he was saying that he would give up all of the freedoms he has in Christ for the sake of winning souls to Christ.  For this Pastor’s Notes, it means that you are free in Christ to be politically active, to vote, to campaign for various candidates, and to hold a particular party affiliation.  But, what God says in His Word is that if  exercising those freedoms might lose me one chance to win a soul for Christ, then I will gladly give up all those freedoms and much, much more for the sake of the Gospel.  Therefore, I personally endeavor to NOT write, preach, or teach about politics so that I may by all means save some!

So, this message is not about politics!  It’s not about choosing “R” vs. “D” or conservative vs. liberal.  This message is about choosing Life vs. Death!  Recently, I saw a video of the New York Legislature celebrating the passing of a new law that legalizes killing unborn children right up to the moment of their birth (https://twitter.com/PPNYCAction/status/1087830306823041024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1087830306823041024&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww1.cbn.com%2Fcbnnews%2Fus%2F2019%2Fjanuary%2Fa-sad-and-evil-day-new-york-legalizes-abortion-up-to-babys-birth-day-on-anniversary-of-roe-v-wade).  It used to be a felony in New York to murder an unborn child in its third trimester, but now abortion has even been stricken from the definition of homicide in New York’s criminal code altogether. The law even states that “every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion.”  It doesn’t even bother trying to make the arguments of whether or not to use the terms baby or fetus and whether or not the baby can live outside the womb.  This new law just comes right out and says child.  The thought that people would cheer for the murder of an innocent child actually made me physically ill.  It felt like I was watching a mob cheering someone on as they beat a baby to death.

I can see no way that we as Christ’s Disciples can just sit back and do nothing about the murder of tens of millions of children.  When we hear on the news about one child being murdered in a drive by shooting or a child being abused, our God-given conscience causes a righteous anger to rise up in our spirits.  Why then do we allow our government to legalize infant torture and murder?  I have heard too many Christians talk about a woman’s “right” to choose abortion.  There is no talk of this right in God’s Word!  What about a baby girl’s right to choose life?  Others ask what about in cases of rape or incest, what about the well-being of the mother?  These are very serious issues indeed, but the question God requires us to ask first is, what did the baby girl or boy do to deserve to be murdered?  This is not a question about choosing one life vs. another, this is a question of choosing a culture of “Life” vs. “Death”!

Let me show you what I mean in God’s Holy Word.  During His incarnation, Jesus was very clear that there is a direct connection between love for Him and obedience to Him.  On the night that He was betrayed He declared, “15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15; cf., John 14:21, 23; 15:10; 1 John 5:3; 2 John 1:6).  It is why Jesus never asked for a decision, but instead, asked for disciples. God the Father also made it very clear that one of those commandments forbids murdering another human being, “13 You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20:13).  Have you ever wondered why?  Well, in the beginning, “27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27).  And after the flood waters had receded, God told Noah, “6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man.” (Genesis 9:6).  So, Christian brothers and sisters, please know without any doubt whatsoever, it is a sin to murder another human being because they were made in the image of God.

The only question left for a true Christ follower regarding abortion is, “What is God’s view of the unborn?”, or maybe better put, “Does God view unborn children as human beings?”.  Well, fortunately for us, God makes the answer to those questions very clear too.  He declared, “22 “If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. 23 But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.” (Exodus 21:22-24).  God is clear that if the unborn child is harmed in any way, then the penalty shall be the same as if the child were already living outside his mother’s womb.  I don’t have the time and space here to describe how Old Testament Law affects the New Testament Believer other than to say, because it reflects God’s character and will, we are able to apply its principle directly to us.  So, what does this passage teach us about God’s character and will regarding unborn children?  It declares that in God’s eyes, every human being, whether 40 days, 40 weeks, or 40 years old is made in His image and is, therefore, sacred!  God views the unborn child as a full-fledged human being and killing that child is murder, period!

Therefore, I encourage you with all the passion I can display in a written message to reject this evil world system’s culture of death!  Do not be taken captive by arguments about man-made constitutions and rights (Colossians 2:8).  Remember the Word and heart of your Lord & Savior and choose life!  This is not a problem that we can turn our backs on and say that it could never happen here!  Just last week, a bill was introduced right here in Virginia to create basically the same God-hating law that was passed in New York (https://twitter.com/vahousegop/status/1090346857925144576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1090346857925144576&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww1.cbn.com%2Fcbnnews%2Fus%2F2019%2Fjanuary%2Ffirst-new-york-now-virginia-democrat-proposes-bill-pushing-to-abort-babies-just-seconds-before-birth).  And just this Wednesday, January 30th, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam defended the 40-week abortion bill by saying, “If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkTopSKo1xs&feature=youtu.be).  To think, as a culture we are now debating how long a baby can live after being delivered before it is wrong to murder that child!  To quote a recent president, “Elections have consequences,” and I pray that we will not stand by and allow this culture of death to seize control of our nation, our families, and our children:  born or unborn!

And, please know that this is much more than how you vote!  Yes, you should prayerfully research individual political candidates and see not only what they have said around election time, but also what they have actually done regarding the issue of abortion the rest of the year. But, there is so much more the body of Christ can do in His name!  You should become a prayer warrior for the unborn, beseeching our Lord to end this God-hating holocaust of children.  You should prayerfully support para-ministries like the Pregnancy Care Center in Martinsville that we are currently raising funds for with our Baby Bottle Boomerang.  You should prayerfully seek how you can personally reach out in love to those women who are in the greatest danger and to those who may have already made this terrible mistake.  And, you should prayerfully consider how you can help the women, who have chosen life for their babies, and their children.  Beloved, this is not a message about politics or choosing “R” vs. “D”.  This is a message about choosing to follow your Lord & Savior, and choosing “Life” vs. “Death”!

January 2019 Pastor’s Notes

Have you ever wondered what exactly is worship?  As Christians, we talk a lot about it and we use the term all the time.  We often say that we are having a “worship service.”  When we sing hymns we call it a “time of worship,” and we call the people who lead our music “worship leaders,” but is that really what worship is all about?  It is true that singing songs to God to praise Him is a form of worship; but, in reality, that is only a small part of how the Bible defines this very important part of a Believer’s life.

I believe that every true Christian is a human instrument  that God has chosen and equipped to be in His spiritual orchestra.  He gives each of us a specific part to play and when we play it from God’s “Holy Sheet Music,” the Bible, He is able to use us to create a Divine Symphony of Worship.  This is why we are going to take a little break from our usual verse by verse study of God’s Word and begin a new sermon series entitled, Worship:  God’s Divine Symphony

I feel led that for us to fully experience the blessing of God’s plans for us in this coming year, we have to understand exactly how He defines True Worship and what it should look like in our fellowship and in our daily lives.  Therefore, over the first four Sundays of 2019, we will be exploring how God answers these important questions in His Holy Word:

  1. What is True Worship?
  2. What is Sunday Worship?
  3. What is Everyday Worship?
  4. What is Evangelistic Worship?

So, please join us every Sunday in January and invite your family and friends, to learn how we can all become virtuosos in God’s Divine Symphony of Worship.

November 2018 Pastor’s Notes

This Thanksgiving our church has so much to thank the Lord for!  Our children’s ministries have continued to grow in both number and Gospel effectiveness.  God brought a record number of souls to both our VBS and AWANA ministries this year.  We were also able to adjust our classrooms downstairs to allow us to increase the size of our nursery to accommodate all the new children and our new Puggles Ministry.  And, after a lot of planning and hard work, we were able to open our Children’s Ministry Room so teachers would have better access to the many teaching tools that God has provided for us, including our amazing Puppets and a new wall-mounted TV with DVD player.

We are also very thankful to God for leading us to form seven new teams to clean the church, in addition to several teams to cut our grass.  And, since the switch to our new July to June fiscal year these savings combined with an increase in our weekly giving has created a marked decrease in our budget gap.  In fact, we have determined that if every family in the church increases their weekly giving by only $10.00, we should be able to completely close that gap!

God has also blessed us with a number of new families that He has already begun to weave into the fabric of our Grace family.  This summer, He gave us four new professions of faith and two new baptisms.  And I’m happy to announce that we are going to have at least one more new Baptism on Sunday, November 18th.  We also had 13 new souls in our summer New Members/Grace Family Foundations Class and as of our Business Meeting last Sunday, we have two more individuals who want to take the class as soon as possible with the intention of joining the church.

Beloved, this Thanksgiving, we truly need to thank our Lord for the blessings and grace He has bestowed on our church this year!

Baptism Sunday

We will be having a special Baptism Service on November 18th!!! Our worship service will begin in the sanctuary at 11am. Please, be sure to join us as we celebrate together the new life these believers have through their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Please contact Pastor Mark if you have any questions.

Children’s Christmas Play

THIS SUNDAY! It’s time again for the GBC Children’s Choir to prepare for their yearly Christmas performance. This year, we will be presenting the musical production, “Christmas Where, When, and Why.” We will have a short meeting Today, directly after the Worship Service, and practices will be held each Sunday, at 4pm, until our show on Sunday, December 16th, at 6:30pm.  Please contact Pam or Maura Elkins with any questions.

Trunk & Treat

Mark your calendars! Our annual Trunk and Treat will be on Tuesday, October 31st from 6-8pm in the Grace Baptist Church parking lot. Please join us for some safe family fun, as we pass out free candy, roast marshmallows, drink warm apple cider, and hot chocolate, as we enjoy fellowship together. Be sure to invite your friends for this fun, FREE event! Please comment or message Grace Baptist Church if you have any questions!

Note: We will not have Wednesday Night Fellowship activities on Wednesday, October 31st. We invite you to bring your families for our fun event.

Apple Dumpling Festival Outreach

The Stuart Apple Dumpling Festival is on Saturday, October 20th, from 10am-4pm, and we will be there with a GBC booth.  We need help from volunteers like you for setup, clean-up, handing out waters, and face painting.  If you would like to join us (and we would love to have you), there is a sign-up sheet on the Ministry table in the Sanctuary.  It is a fun event of service, fellowship, and representing our great God to the community!

October Grace Notes

Well Beloved, Fall is in the air and it is already October!!!  This means that we have so many opportunities to glorify God at Grace this month, that it can actually be hard to keep track of them all:

  • Women’s Retreat—Oct. 6th
  • Apple Dumpling Outreach—Oct. 20th
  • Blood Drive Outreach—Oct. 24th
  • Trunk & Treat Outreach—Oct. 31st

In addition to all of this, we are also going to begin to examine our first new book of the Bible in three years.  As our church continues to grow and we see more and more new families becoming part of our Community of Christ, it is important for us to consider exactly what the Bible teaches us about the church and how it is supposed to function.  This is why I am pleased to announce that after much prayer, I believe that God wants us to carefully review Paul’s first letter to his protégé:  1 Timothy.

Paul wrote to Timothy, a young pastor of a church in need of Instruction, Encouragement and Warning.  Although he wrote almost 2000 years ago, the topics that he addressed are still concerns today for the 21st century church in America.  For example, over the next several months, we will learn of the Importance of Prayer & Perseverance in the Church, God’s Qualifications for Church Leaders & Servants, the Roles of Women & Pastors, the Proper Handling of Money & False Teachers, and the Church’s Responsibilities to Widows, Pastors, Slaves, & the Lost.

We will be kicking off our review with a four-part series that lays the ground work for the rest of Paul’s Letter:  “The Who, Why, What, & How of 1 Timothy.”  So, please invite your family, neighbors,  and friends to join us, as we begin this exciting and informative look at God’s Instructions for Christ’s Church.

Our newest AWANA Club, Puggles, introduces kids from the ages of 2 and 3 about God and His word. At Cubbies, we teach kids through the ages 4-5 about the Bible right to their level using fun and games. At Sparks, kids from grades K-2nd are introduced to memorizing Scripture and enjoying entertaining games together. We also have our T&T Club. T&T stands for “Truth and Training” and this club hosts students from grades 3rd-6th. It’s a very special club where the kids move forward with memorizing and learning scripture in addition to hanging out and competing in exciting games at recreation time. And last but not least is our newest club…TREK which is geared toward older students in the 7th and 8th grades.
